Beautiful Story Out of Japan Tragedy

There have been so many tragic stories come out of the Japan earthquake and tsunami that it almost becomes overwhelming. Already more than 3,000 declared dead, with expectations of a final total around 10,000 being given by government officials. Deana and I happened to see some video footage on a news program this week that showed people being swept away as they tried to pull their belongings out of the way of the tidal wave. I know it could have been one of many valuable earthly possessions they were trying to save, but it wasn’t worth it. It was gut-wrenching to think someone would die for a piece of property.

Today someone sent me a story with a happy ending, and the beginning and middle weren’t so bad either. It’s about a couple of dogs. Reminding me of an episode of “Lassie,” one straggly dog was barking at rescue crews searching through the debris. This spunky little pup led the rescuers to another dog. It appeared this dog had stayed with his friend at least five days. An animal rescue team was called in, but the first dog wouldn’t leave the side of his injured friend and wasn’t happy with them trying to take his buddy away. They eventually were able to get the injured dog up and couriered away. Both dogs ended up at a shelter where they were treated and international media reports they’re doing fine.

People clinging to stuff to the point they give up their life for it; and a dog willing to starve himself to stay with an injured friend. Makes you wonder who is better at demonstrating humanity. Please continue praying for those in Japan who are suffering and struggling through this horrible disaster. Also for rescue workers – national and international – who are on the scene looking for survivors; and for the leaders making decisions about what steps to take as the nation moves ahead.

If you want to see the video of the dog, here it is. It’s pretty touching.

The Unexamined Life and All,

Here are a couple links to news stories about this dog from international newspapers:
