Before JJ’s had reached double-digit birthdays he was asking for his own waffle maker. Not the department store home model, but a commercial waffle maker. It was the top item on his Christmas list when we moved to Texas, so we broke down and got him the commercial waffle maker. Let the waffle making commence!

We have a wide variety of waffle tastes in our family. There is the strange waffle-eater who likes the plain waffle with only butter. No syrup. Just butter. *yawn*

There is one who enjoys the traditional waffle with butter and syrup. Very pedestrian, but a classic.

We have one member of the family who enjoys a waffle with chocolate chips and butter on top. Closer.

Then there’s the person with good taste…I’ll let you wonder who this is. This father of the family enjoys the chocolate chips mixed into the batter and cooked golden brown. He tops the waffle with some butter, a dusting of powdered sugar, a little (or lot) of whipped topping, then a drizzle of chocolate syrup. This waffle is perfect for a gourmet breakfast, fun supper item, or even an evening dessert. It qualifies for any time or situation. This is why it’s the perfect waffle!

A St. Patrick's waffle at the last Wave "Waffle Day" party. Green waffle served with green egg casserole, green melon and green grapes. Yum!

We’ve also been hosting a Jr. High party every St. Patrick’s Day for the past few years complete with GREEN waffles (and assorted other green food).

Homemade waffles have a special place in my heart because it’s what I loved having for breakfast when I we would spend the night at Grandma Carter’s house. She would make homemade waffles on an old (to me) waffle iron. This is why waffles rank right up there with meatloaf as a comfort food in my book. Mmmmm…waffles and meatloaf.

So, enjoy a waffle today! Don’t despair if you don’t have a waffle maker in your house. You can still enjoy a frozen toaster waffle. It’s not the type or how fancy; it’s watching butter melt into those little holes and waiting to be eaten up. It’s about cutting up a waffle on the lines to keep that butter cup intact. It’s about the joy of enjoying a waffle with family or friends or all by yourself.

One day JJ will leave home…and I will be sad. You see, the waffle maker is his and will go with him.

The Unexamined Life and All…
- Jeff
